Truly scary
A young girl was brutally gang raped right outside her high school dance. A crowd watched the raping and some even did the unthinkable.A California high school student who police said was gang raped in a two-and-a-half-hour assault outside a homecoming dance, remained hospitalized in stable condition Monday, two days after she was flown from the attack scene in critical condition. Investigators said as many as 15 people, all males, stood around watching the assault, but did not call police or help the victim.

Yes this is truly scary. Many people are caught up in their everyday lived and have failed to realize this. Things like this happen a lot in the U.S. People need to realize how corrupt society can be. Maybe, if something like this was happening around you, then you could be the one to act, call the police, and stop it. Things like this should not happen

I read about this and saw it on the news. Its terrible when you are not even safe at a school dance. There should have been chaperones present to stop this. The ones that chose to stand around and watch are disgusting. Instead of getting help they chose to do nothing. I dont go to parties or many school events and this is part of the reason why. I hope when I start college that there will be plenty of campus security to prevent these kind of ordeals.

Wow that is so scary! At a school function, you should be able to feel safe. How did no teachers or chaperons not see this? We always have adults and police outside of our dances. I feel so bad for the girl! Do you know if she is okay now? You are totally right, things like this should not happen. I can't believe people saw her being attacked and did not call the police! They should be charged too! They assisted the crime in a way because they did nothing to stop it.

What I don't understand is how the gang did that to an innocent girl. I've never understood how someone could want to intentionally hurt someone else. Its so mean. :( That whole situation could have been avoided if people would have called the police sooner. That poor girl. :( I hope she is okay!

I saw this on the news the other day. It is terrible. I don't understand why no one called the police or tried to stop it. To me, everyone that watched is just as guilty of of rape as the ones that did the raping. They should all be charged with the crime and go to jail.

Re: Truly scary
Its amazing how you can read magazines and feel bad for the conditions of third world countries. See pictures of the rape victims and beatings, shootings and starvation. What most of us dont realize is that our country isn't much better. In an [anonymous] city in New Mexico it is more common to see a house without plumbing than to see one with running water. Here in Florida there are several "tent cities" where homeless people by the thousands have gathered in the woods in secret. We never see them. Ever wonder why? Because in most places being homeless is illegal. Rape is a horrible thing to live through, but it is just the tip of the inhumane things that go on in our country. The news never sheds any light on it hoping to keep us in the dark. I know most of us feel like we are the number one country helping other nations but in reality we are number 36. I know this rant is sort of off topic, but my point is the same as yours, People need to be informed properly and do something about the injustices, not just the ones that make the news, but all the injustices.

Re: Truly scary
sadly, it does not surprise me at all that this happened. Thousands of girls are raped on college campuses every day. I have great sympathy for rape victims. It is not only physically damaging, it is terribly mentally damaging. Rape is a huge problem in our country. The biggest problem is that men, and women are treated like just bodies They don't have a value. Men can take what they want and leave you. Women doe the same thing. There is a great problem with morality in our country. It is one reason why I get frustrated when people say God bless America. America does not deserve to be blessed.

Re: Truly scary
Where do I begin with this? There is just SO much wrong with the scenario.

First of all, where on earth were the chaperones? I recently chaperoned the homecoming dance where I student teach, and if we didn't get enough chaperones, the dance would have been cancelled. We had chaperones everywhere: on the dance floor, patrolling the halls, outside... everywhere.

Second, how on earth could anyone live with themselves to just stand there and watch? Were there weapons involved? Did the people committing the crime threaten bystanders with bodily harm? How did nobody call the cops?

Third, how do they know how long the assault lasted? Was someone standing and watching for two and a half hours? And did nothing?

School should always be a place where students feel (and are)safe. This obviously wasn't the case for this poor girl. I hope the people who committed the crime (including those who stood by and did nothing to help the girl or call 911) are severely punished. The sad thing is that nothing will undo that night for that girl.

Re: Truly scary
I wish things like this shocked more people and drove them to act against this kind of behavior. When has the world been THAT violent?? Or has it always been like this?
I was going to start a forum about how desensitized America has become lately, but this forum seems like a good place to discuss that.

Speaking of violent deaths among high school and college students in the past two months, let me refresh your memory (or tell you for the first time) about two in particular:

First, in September a Yale Medical Student, Annie Le, was strangled and found in the basement wall of an off-campus medical research building on the following Sunday---which would have been her WEDDING DAY! How sadistic can you get?! They still haven't figured out who did this sick thing to her.

Second, at the end of last month, Jasper Howard, 20, from Miami, a Connecticut football player at UConn (who was als an expectant father!!!) was stabbed to death early Sunday after an on-campus dance, just hours after helping his team to a homecoming victory.
He and another student were stabbed during a fight after a fire alarm was pulled during a university sanctioned dance at the UConn Student Union just after 12:30 a.m., police said.

Can you believe the jealousy and heartlessness that exists in people today??? Even though this was on the national news, not a lot people ever heard about these tragic incidents. I'm also REALLY surprised that colleges around the country haven't increased their security or done SOMETHING to help prevent things like this from happening to their school. Safety should never be compromised...but often times it is not seen as something that is crucial at most colleges [depending on where you go to school of course].

I hate that people are not aware of how violent people can be in the world today. Also, it absolutely sickens me that some people try to justify different acts of violence.

Re: Truly scary
I see violence at my school all the time. I'm in a magnet school for Math and Science, and to bring up test scores the County put us in one of the worst schools in the county. Just last Friday after school there was a fight between two girls that resulted in blood all over the floor. I personally wasn't there when it happened, but the girl who was assaulted is in my AP Lit class, and she told us the story today. The girl who attacked her wanted a piece of candy, and she wouldn't give her one. So she attacked her, grabbing her by the hair, slamming her head into the floor, and kicking her in the face. Just like in the gang rape you described, people crowded around the scene and instead of finding a teacher or administrator, just watched. Schools can be very violent places. Sometimes I'm afraid to even use the bathroom if the wrong people are in it. It's a problem that needs to be fixed.

Its so sad to hear something like this . I mean people need to start caring about this world they are living in and just stop trying to get by. I mean I wonder if this was someone they knew would they stop it or just let it keep happening!..

Re: Truly scary
That true things like this happen evey day and they really shouldnt. If I were the one witnessing this I would definantly try to do something, because I kno that if I were in that girls position i too would want someone to help me. Its becasue of people like this that jus let things happen that our community is so currupt. I cant even imagine the way the girl felt having had so many people there but none to help. Truley a sad event.

Re: Truly scary
What a tragic! What I don't understand is why didn't the students who witnessed the incident call for help or even tried to help the poor girl. Instead, they've decided to watch as if it was a movie. Did they think it was amusing? Digusting! Some people think it's fun to watch, quite disturbing, and even think about recording it with their phone and publicize it. That is a great disappointment because they don't realize that it can also happen to them or their sisters, or anyone relating to them. I hate it so much when these incidents happen, esp on a school campus.
